About the Harlem Gospel Choir:

The African American community of New York to this day proudly preserves its cultural gems. The church music of the protestant congregation has had a profound effect on many musical genres worldwide, starting with the 20th century. It is the root of pop music, blues, jazz, and all the modern genres and musical types stemming from these movements.

The legendary, and world famous Harlem Gospel choir was founded by Allen Bailey in 1986 at the famuos New York Cotton Club, for a celebration of the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s birth. The members of the choir were Harlem’s most accomplished and distinguished gospel musicians and singers.

The choir has 65 members spanning three different generations from ages 17 to 65 (the tour line-up has nine singers).

The choir is known for it’s spiritual musical mission, having performed in the Vatican for Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. it is not surprising that their cultural mission also carries a political message, which consists of empathy for everyone, understanding and accepting in the names of Faith, Hope, Peace and Love.
