Orthodox Christmas Concert By St Ephraim Male Choir, Basilica, 7 January

This is going to be the sixth season of the Orientale Lumen series which has grown to be an integrate part of our lives. Saint Ephraim Male Choir is eager to discover lesser-known territories of the vast domain of Eastern Christian music and to deliver these gems to the audience. The St Ephraim Male Choir presents its Christmas concert on January 7 at 8 pm in Budapest’s St. Stephen Basilica.
Nowadays, a cappella music is enjoying a renaissance the world over, especially in the world of popular music. The group’s profile, character as well as its mission confirms this tendency in a unique way. Where does it say that classical music can’t be popular? Or that popular music can’t wield classical values?
The choir, when it was founded in 2002 specialized in Greek, Russian and Hungarian Byzantine music. Today, it is the most acclaimed vocal group in the country, renowned for quality performances. The exceptional abilities of its members enables the choir to choose from a wide selection of repertoire, indeed.
Whether it’s church music that you’re after, a powerful performance of contemporary music, enjoying short outtakes from Italian films accompanied by renditions of Italian bar music from the 1500’s until nowadays, or you just can’t resist an insightful staging of the works of Hungarian composer-giants, Liszt and Bartok, needless to say, you shall always be in for a treat with the Saint Ephraim Male Choir.
On 7th January at their Orthodox Christmas concert the Saint Ephraim Male Choir is eager to discover lesser-known territories of the vast domain of Eastern Christian music and to deliver these gems to the audience. Tamás Bubnó, the artistic director of the Saint Ephraim Male Choir has compiled a diversified program that includes Hungarian folk musician Balázs Sipos from Muzsikás Ensemble, on stage. T
he concert will feature music from ancient Christian times and from various cultures including the Slavic, the Mediterranean and those from the Carpathian basin. And, according to ‘tradition’, the audience will also have the opportunity to sing at the end of the concert.
