Szijjártó added that US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had made clear the United States’ expectations with concerning the future of NATO: that the military alliance should play a greater role in the fight against terrorism, and that the allies must fulfill their commitments with regard to defense spending in accordance with previous agreements.

Szijjártó stressed that Hungary will be fulfilling its commitment to increased defense spending to 2 percent of GDP by 2024.

“Hungary agrees with America’s targets and believes the total eradication of the Islamic State terrorist organization could provide a solution to the migration crisis, as well as preventing the disappearance of Christian communities in the Middle Eastern region,” said Szijjártó.

The Foreign Minister also indicated that the Hungarian Government will recommend that Parliament extend Hungary’s participation in the coalition against ISIS by an additional two years and increase the number of Hungarian military personnel currently deployed in Northern Iraq from 150 to 200.
