Hungarian Dance Academy: Studying For Life, 31 May
Authentic folk dance and contemporary creative works. Seriousness and play. Choreographies mastered after much practice and improvisation. These are all part of the examination performance: the crowning achievement of five gruelling years. For the 24 students taking the folk dance specialisation of the dance performance course, this is the moment when they conclude their studies, account for themselves, and start their careers as professional dancers.

he first part of the programme focuses on modern dance, demonstrating how up-to-date the skills of the class members are and the sophistication of their powers of expression - abilities that will meet the standards of practically any dance company they may later find themselves in.

Some of the creative artists (Gábor Mihályi, Zsolt Juhász, Bertalan Vári and Zsófia Horváth) have each assigned one of their existing pieces to the youngsters, while others (Noémi Kulcsár and Tamás Topolánszky) have created new works for them.

After the interval, Hungarian folk dance takes centre stage. This was the core "curriculum” of the five academic years, which the young artists "speak” as a native terpsichorean tongue. Fortunately, this is something that is understood and appreciated by a great many dance enthusiasts in the 21st century.

In addition to commending the talent of the graduating students, this part of the show is also a credit to the work, personalised attention and talent development abilities of the teaching faculty that instructed them - János Appelshoffer, Anikó Béres, Gyöngyvér Hortobágyi, Béla Ónodi and Miklós Végső. Guaranteed to further enhance the anticipated triumph are Bence Pálházi and his band.
