December 24 Holiday Voted Down
Parliament’s enterprise development committee on Thursday voted down a bill submitted by Dialogue politician Tímea Szabó in consultation with the Hungarian Trade Union Alliance, on declaring December 24 as a holiday.

Szabó said the question had long been on the political agenda and, according to a trade union survey, 96% of the employees support such a proposal.

The motion was only supported by Jobbik and Socialist MPs but was voted down by the Fidesz majority on the committee. Therefore only a referendum can help declare December 24 a holiday.

As the deadline for collecting signatures is November 28, the necessary 200,000 signatures need to be collected by that date.
