Socialists: Mayor Should Decide Whether He Represents Budapest Or Fidesz
Budapest Mayor István Tarlós should decide whether he represents the city or the ruling Fidesz party, the opposition Socialists’ representative in the municipal council general assembly said.

Referring to the newly established state secretary’s office in charge of Budapest development, he said Tarlós should refuse to work with the “proconsul” who will “hinder work instead of advancing it”, Csaba Horváth said before the general assembly meeting.

A representative of the opposition Párbeszéd also said that there was no need for a state secretary’s office in charge of Budapest or its head Balázs Fürjes.

Ever since 2010, more and more resources and powers have been taken away from Budapest, Márta V Naszályi told a press conference.

Because of the resulting financial difficulties, the city can’t even properly make use of available resources.

On top of that, a state secretary has now been appointed to oversee the long-term development of the city, she said. Instead of developing a brand new development plan, the existing one should be implemented by 2030, she added.
