Opposition to Bring Hungary to a Standstill if Fidesz Wins Election Through Fraud
- 7 Jan 2026 7:53 AM
Hadházy spoke at a demonstration held in central Budapest, protesting the distribution of a special issue of the newspaper Bors on the opposition Tisza Party's programme which a court decision has banned earlier.
He said the distribution of the special issue had been "a simple case of election fraud, in defiance of a court order." If the authorities "do not stop state interference in the elections," it would mean the continuation of election fraud, he said.
Hadházy said the Bors case was "one of the most blatant self-revelations by Fidesz to date, an open admission that they are capable of any illegality."
"If those in power openly trample even the laws they themselves have created, then we too will have to peacefully but firmly and resolutely cross certain lines," he said. He added that those in power were extremely afraid of visible opposition protests.
He said that the ruling temporarily suspending the distribution of the special issue had been issued by a lower court, which "still has a certain degree of independence at these levels."
"However, the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court ... are practically under the complete influence and control of Fidesz," and after the elections, these bodies will decide on the "fate and consequences" of the legality complaints, he said.
"Fidesz can rest assured that despite the current court mishap, they can continue to cheat with impunity because they will easily obtain a certificate of legality even in the most brazen and obvious cases of fraud, if we allow it," he added.
Hadházy said the main question in the coming months will continue to be whether "it is possible to defeat the powers that be in a system that is anything but a classic parliamentary democracy, using the simple tools of parliamentary democracy and simple campaigning."
After his speech, the demonstrators occupied the crosswalk at the intersection, stopping traffic for about half an hour. After the police repeatedly called on the participants to end the illegal move, they moved onto the sidewalk.
The demonstration ended shortly before 6.30pm.
