Duna Carnival Gala Performance: ‘Our Love, Kalotaszeg’, 16 June

The crowning moment of the Duna Carnival is always the Gala Performance on Margaret Island, and this year promises to be no exception.
The 2018 carnival is a collaboration of around 300 dance artists from all over the world as folk dance ensembles and orchestra from inland and abroad present a dialogue of cultures through an epic carnival of unique collaborations. Invited countries: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Macedonia, Peru, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Turkey.
Our Love, Kalotaszeg
This gala production is a collaboration of around 200 artists from dance ensembles and orchestras in the spirit of tradition and modernity, starring the Duna Art Ensemble and the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble.
Instead of keeping traditions the way they are, these artists believe in renewable and inheritable traditions, handing them over to the next generation. The up-to-date adaptation don’t discredit traditional values, rather they keep and make them feel alive.
Kalotaszeg has given a lot of expcetional dancers and musicians to folk culture, just to mention a couple of names: István Mátyás „Mundruc”, János Fekete Jr. „Poncsa”, István Jankó „Pitti”, Sándor Fodor (Netti Sanyi), Ferenc Berki „Árus”.
The performance aims to highlight the invisible beauty of what’s hiding inside an artist’s mind while also paying homage to the body-of-work of these towering figures.
The performances is based on the fate of these dancers and musicians, small episodes of their lives while also trying to vivify their personalities – the music and dance itself is based on the Hungarian, Romanian and Romani songs and choreographies which have survived thanks to these artists.
While certain scenes favour a solo approach, others sequences get their dramatic accent from the exciting collaboration of nearly two hundred dancers at the same time. The mesmerizing surroundings of the Margaret Island Open-Air Theatre will host a grandiose and overwheliming experience, not just for fans of folk music and dance.
