Baby Births In Hungary On The Wane
The number of newborn babies decreased in the first 11 months of last year, despite government efforts to boost the population, financial website Az Én Pénzem reports.

There were approximately 82,500 births, down from 84,000 in the same period of 2017.

The website calculates that 90,000 or even fewer babies were born in 2018, down from an average of more than 97,000 between 1998 and 2008.

During the Fidesz reign there were two years, 2011 and 2013, when the number of births was little more than 88,000.

The State Treasury told the website that as at the end of October, the government had opened life-starting deposit accounts for 3,272 babies living abroad. Of those, 63% were registered in Romania, 8% in Serbia, and 6% in Austria. Another 130 Hungarian babies in Germany and nearly 100 in the UK are registered in Hungarian statistics.
