“We cannot accept that Brussels has abandoned Europeans, moreover, turned against them,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a speech marking Hungary’s March 15 national holiday.
President Tamás Sulyok has set Sunday, June 9 as the date of the election of Hungary’s MEPs for the next European Parliament as well as the date of the municipal elections, the presidential Sándor Palace announced on its website.
The ruling parties have decided to nominate Tamás Sulyok, the current head of the Constitutional Court, for head of state.
Hungary’s will be the “most pro-enlargement European Union presidency of all time”, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said in Brussels on Tuesday, adding that the focus during accession talks would be on the “actual performance” of candidate countries rather than “bowing to political pressure”.
