Gergely Karácsony has won the election for Budapest mayor, the National Election Committee (NVB) confirmed after a recount of the invalid votes cast in the recent municipal elections, on Friday evening.
Gergely Gulyás, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office, called the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union to fine Hungary 200 million euros for not complying with EU legislations on asylum and on returning illegal immigrants to their home countries “outrageous, unfair and unacceptable”.
Péter Magyar, deputy leader and EP list-leading candidate of the Respect and Freedom (Tisza) party, said the Tisza party would prove to the Hungarian people that politics “can be beautiful, just and honest”.
An independent analyst believes that Sunday’s municipal and European elections have opened a new era in Hungarian politics.
