An investigation by Direkt36 has revealed that Hungarian intelligence services operated a covert spy network in Brussels throughout much of the 2010s, targeting Hungarian nationals working within EU institutions.
Someone is producing a series of fake social media profiles of Hungarian opposition MEPs, and is using them to attribute false statements to the politicians. One such fake account has been cited as real by pro-Fidesz media.
"The fight is on for an independent, free and liveable Hungary," Peter Magyar, the leader of the opposition Tisza Party, told a rally in Budapest on Saturday, adding that "more and more people are joining Tisza's community as they see the nicer face of Hungary and carry on building it".
Two years ago, a Portuguese businessman with good Hungarian government connections bought the Euronews TV channel.
