Following the publication of the official results of the Russian presidential election, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán sent a letter to President Vladimir Putin to congratulate him on his recent re-election, the prime minister’s press chief said.
“We cannot accept that Brussels has abandoned Europeans, moreover, turned against them,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in a speech marking Hungary’s March 15 national holiday.
Officials commemorated the memorial day for the victims of communism on Sunday. Speaking at a ceremony at the House of Terror Museum in Budapest, interior ministry state secretary Bence Rétvári said violence was a fundamental aspect of communism, and “the left always looks the other way when it comes to violence”.
Calls for the resignation of Hungary's conservative president intensified on Friday following widespread anger over her decision to pardon an individual convicted of concealing a child sexual abuse case. The move has triggered an unprecedented political scandal for the longstanding nationalist government.
