The Central European University remains committed to relocating its US-accredited programmes from Budapest to Vienna in the new academic year, a pro-rector at the institution told The Associated Press.

Eva Fodor, Pro-Rector for Social Sciences and Humanities at the CEU, said the Vienna campus would open in September, adding: "As of this moment, we cannot admit students to our US-accredited programmes in Hungary."

The move is necessary because the Hungarian government has refused to sign agreements allowing the CEU, founded by Hungarian-American financier George Soros, to admit students for its US programmes from this year.

The continuation of all of CEU's activities in Budapest is one of the conditions set by the European People's Party (EPP), the main centre-right alliance in the European Parliament, for Orban's Fidesz party to remain in the group.

Fidesz was recently suspended by the EPP until an evaluation commission led by former EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy issues a report on the Hungarian government's allegiance to democratic EU values and the rule of law.
