In addition to London as the Laureate, Antwerp, Budapest, Guangzhou, Taipei and Tianjin have been selected as Special Mentions for their outstanding best practices in urban initiatives and innovative approaches to city transformation.
"One of Budapest's greatest strengths is that it is able to think in terms of systems: the developments simultaneously reflect the physical and digital connection of transport networks, the recovery of the public spaces and the restoration of the natural environment," Karacsony said.
According to the laudation, "with prudent resource management, the city has achieved remarkable transformation through strategic innovation and tactical urbanism," the Mayor's Office said in a statement.
About the award:
The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize is a biennial international award that honours outstanding achievements in creating liveable, vibrant and sustainable urban communities.
It is given to cities that have shown strong leadership, good governance and innovation in tackling urban problems in ways that bring social, economic and environmental benefits to residents.
The prize is co‑organised by Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority and the Centre for Liveable Cities, and is named after Singapore’s founding prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, in recognition of his role in shaping Singapore as a model city.
Winners receive a certificate, a gold medallion and a cash prize of 300,000 Singapore dollars, and the prize is presented at the World Cities Summit in Singapore.
