At the beginning of December somebody released several cubic metres of thick oil into the protected branch of the Danube in the middle of Szigetszentmiklós, destroying 2,000 square metres of rare floating bogs, reeds and other vegetation.
It could take years to get rid of the traces of the oil spill on this specific stretch.
Water experts doing damage control have so far pumped off more than 10,000 litres of oil derivatives and oily water.
Rikárd Pfeifer, the man who discovered the pollution, helped to collect more than Ft 4 million for a reward last week.
He told Telex that the amphibians, reptiles and fish trapped under the oil were almost all killed. So far, only a few creatures have been found alive, including a swamp turtle.
The National Water Authority said on Monday that machines were continuously working on damage control at the weekend.
More than 400,000 kilograms of hazardous waste have been removed from the Ráckeve branch of the Danube to date, including 160,000 kilograms of polluted vegetation and sludge taken away on Sunday.
