Budapest Pride Festival, 14 – 23 August
- 16 Apr 2020 10:51 AM
The March and Rainbow Party will fall on Saturday, August 22, and the festival will end on Sunday, August 23.
'A year without Budapest Pride is not an option!' says a press release posted on budapestpride.com. Unless the current state of emergency lasts through December, Pride will be celebrated in 2020. This year will be the 25th anniversary of the Budapest Pride Festival. Were it not for the pandemic, 2020 would have marked the third year in which the event lasted a full month.
The new date for the festival is based on the organiser's best current knowledge. When the coronavirus first appeared in Europe, they coordinated with Pride organizers from 70 countries and took part in conference calls. In light of the pandemic, a strategic plan was developed to review the new schedule and adapt as needed.
The slogan of this year’s festival — “Claim back your future!” — reflects as much on people’s anxiety about ever-growing social inequality and the crisis in housing as it does on the ecological crisis.
The coronavirus situation is also a crisis and can easily lead to panic and inability to act. The best response to anxiety is by acting together, which we hope to inspire with this year’s slogan. Now, more than ever, it’s important to connect to the community, pay attention to others and give strength to one another.
