2.5 Million Hungarians Lost Income Due To Covid-19
Some 25% of Hungarians are living on less money, and 8% have a much lower income since the start of the epidemic, according to a survey conducted by the left-leaning Publicus Institute at the end of April.

The poll of a sample of 1,000 people shows that many noticed the rise in food prices. When asked what is causing their financial situation to get worse, the vast majority of respondents, 65%, cited high inflation.

On another question, 17% of those surveyed said their workplace is not functioning, that they received less pay, or that they had no income at all since the outbreak.

However, due to the deteriorating financial situation, only 12% of those affected asked for help from relatives, friends, or a bank.

At the same time, food industry executives say bread, milk, meat and soft drinks will become more expensive. The price of basic ingredients and staple foods has risen by 40-50%, and in some cases by more than 100% in a few months.

When people think of Europeans migrating abroad, they often imagine sunny destinations with Mediterranean beaches in Southern Europe. Indeed, countries such as Portugal and Spain remain very popular. Yet for my fellow Dutch countrymen, Hungary is increasingly becoming a preferred destination as well. This must be for different reasons, as Hungary — being landlocked — is hardly known for its beaches.
