Lower Quay of Danube Bank in Budapest to be Car-free
The lower quay on the Pest side south of the Chain Bridge, presumably to the Erzsébet Bridge, will become a car-free zone permanently, Telex reports.

Related construction work will begin in the first half of next year after the renovation of the middle section of the M3 metro line.

Mayor Gergely Karácsony told Telex in an interview that he waited until after the election to make the announcement.

A Medián poll in 2020 found that the majority of Budapest residents supported the car-free zone: 73% agreed to make it car-free on weekends, and 59% approved the complete exclusion of motorised vehicles.

Urban planners and urban planning experts have been saying for at least a decade that one of the most unexploited areas of Budapest is the lower quay, which has been expropriated by cars, which makes it almost impossible to walk close to the Danube, Telex writes.

Meanwhile, in Vienna, Paris, and Bratislava, more and more riverside areas are being made car-free, and given over to pedestrians and cyclists.
