Few Hungarians Have Confidence in Anti-Corruption Measures
Nearly two-thirds of Hungarians believe that the new anti-corruption organisations speedily established in the hope of obtaining EU funds will not reduce corruption in Hungary, according to a survey conducted by the Publicus Institute for Népszava.

Most respondents said the cabinet only wanted to meet EU expectations quickly and formally so as to access nearly Ft 3 trillion in EU money.

Parliament approved bills designed to meet the EU’s anti-corruption requirements on October 3 and 4.

Fewer than two-thirds of Fidesz supporters had heard about the cabinet putting together a legislative package aimed at curbing corruption at the EU’s insistence, whereas nearly 90% of the opposition voters were aware of it.

Overall, 71% of the respondents agree that Hungary should join the European Prosecutor’s Office and 71% also said the EU organisation should investigate domestic corruption cases.

Almost all opposition voters, 98%, support joining the European Prosecutor’s Office, compared to only 37% of Fidesz voters. One-fourth of the latter refused to answer this question.
