Ground Squirrels Moved at Budapest Airport
As one of the first preparatory steps for the refurbishment of taxiways, runway II and the expansion of the BUD Cargo City apron, with the safety of local wildlife in mind, the relocation of protected ground squirrels in the development areas was successfully completed, following weeks of planning and before the animals hibernate.

The relocation of the ground squirrels was necessary due to nature conservation and aviation safety reasons and was carried out by a team of biologists, with the help of Budapest Airport’s environmental protection specialists.

Airport staff relocated 56 animals to another area within the airport fence, where they do not pose a safety risk and can live undisturbed and safely.

A pre-established system of tunnels awaited the protected ground squirrel families at their new home.

The team used hand drills to bore holes in the ground, to create a new “estate” for the animals.
