Counter-Terrorist Police Used During Nationwide Crack Down on Orthopaedic Aids Scam in Hungary
Officers from the National Bureau of Investigations have caught 17 people – six doctors, the chief executives of eight companies and three employees – in a fraud case related to medical orthopaedic aids, after an investigation that began in November.

The case has 26 suspects, the Emergency Police announced.

Specialist doctors are accused of prescribing the orthopaedic aids with the highest state subsidies regardless of whether patients needed them or not and then claiming the relevant state funds illegally.

Nearly 250 police officers searched more than 60 locations during a nationwide raid.

Two of the doctors are from Szeged; the other four are based in Makó, Szigetszentmiklós, Szekszárd and Budaörs.

The collaborating heads of orthopaedic aid manufacturers are mostly in Szeged but one is based in Ceglédbercel and another in Budapest.

Police seized dozens of mobile phones, 47 computers and laptops, company documents, and medical aids, as well as Ft 80 million impounded from the suspects’ bank accounts and in cash, and other assets worth more than Ft 70 million.

Units of the Counter-Terrorist Police were needed during the operation, as several suspects had firearms.
