The number of foreign students at universities studying for bachelors and masters degrees more than doubled from 15,000 to 36,000 between 2010 and 2022, meaning that as a proportion of the total they have increased from 6.9% to 19%.

The largest contingent originates from Germany, with 3,274 students, followed by China with 2,330.

Iran ranked third, with 1,887, followed by Romania with 1,672, Serbia with 1,409, Slovakia with 1,186, France with 1,056, Pakistan with 1,046, Nigeria with 1,038 and India in tenth slot, with 1,001.

The total number of students attending higher education institutions in Hungary, including those on distance learning courses, grew rapidly between 2000 and 2006, peaking at over 400,000, but then went into steady decline until 2018, when a small, temporary increase occurred.

This was followed by a drop last year to stand a little under 300,000, all according to data from the Central Statistics Office.
