The factory plans to expand its capacity, which requires a 8.5km water pipe to take water from the Danube river and a 13.5km sewage pipe, Erzsébet Schmuck told a press conference.
Moreover, the investment would impact the territory of a NATURA 2000 nature reserve, where hundreds of protected plants have been destroyed, even though the investor was obligated to replant them, Schmuck said. The project is receiving 32 billion forints (EUR 82m) in government support, she added.
LMP opposes battery plants as “water and energy guzzlers”, Schmuck said.
Also, the handling of scrap produced by battery plants is becoming increasingly difficult as authorities suspended operations at a waste management site in Bátonyterenye due to irregularities, she said. Currently, there is only one site operating in the country, she added.
