US May Sanction Some Hungarians Connected to Political Elite

The US has informed some of its European allies that it will impose sanctions on Hungarian individuals, VSquare newsletter reports, citing anonymous diplomatic sources.
Sources say the list is not yet complete, and the US has not decided when the sanctions will come into effect.
The US will impose sanctions on Hungarians who are probably connected to the political elite for their involvement in corruption cases, according to VSquare.
The Biden administration reckons that Viktor Orbán will present himself as a martyr when he hears about the sanctions.
Telex adds that the information from VSquare is consistent with what ambassador David Pressman told journalists in a background conversation a few months ago.
At the time, he spoke about how the US was looking for ways to put pressure on the Hungarian government in order to change its position on the Russo-Ukrainian war.
Pressman said one stop in exerting pressure was the imposition of sanctions on the Budapest-based International Investment Bank, known as a Russian “spy bank”.
The Hungarian government backed down within hours and announced that Hungary would withdraw from the institution, Telex recalls.
