The Catholic news website did not go into detail but the website of M1 Híradó posted a video showing the man standing naked on the altar.

Some of those present tried to get him to come down, but failed.

The man was finally led away by police. The building had to be closed for a short time due to the sacrilegious incident.

Evening masses and services were held without disruption after an expiatory service was conducted in the Basilica.

Budapest Police took the man, a 20-year-old Nigerian studying in Debrecen, into custody.

This was not the first time that he had committed a sacrilegious act.

His deportation was ordered on Wednesday with immediate effect. The man is reportedly staying at the Nyírbátor guarded reception centre.
