Destructive Fruit Pest Detected in Hungary

Hungary has recorded its first confirmed case of the spotted lanternfly (Lycma delicatula), an EU-regulated quarantine pest that was identified by the food safety authority Nébih after a report from a resident of Bács-Kiskun county.
The insect was also recently detected in Moldova, a neighbour of EU-member country Romania.
The pest poses a significant risk to vineyards, fruit trees and forests, with around 100 known host plants.
In heavily infested parts of North America, grape growers have reported yield losses of up to 90%.
The Nébih said the insect can spread readily because females lay egg masses on a wide range of smooth surfaces, allowing them to be transported on vehicles, timber and freight.
The authority urged the public to report suspected sightings immediately, noting that the first Hungarian detection was itself made following a public tip.
