Orbán is Highest Paid European PM Relative to Average Pay
Of all European prime ministers, Viktor Orban earns the most compared to the average salary of the country he leads, according to Peter Bucsky, a journalist at the business news website G7, speaking on RTL’s morning news programme Reggeli.

Bucsky noted that, as average salaries rise, so do politicians’ incomes, which in Hungary are linked to the previous year’s average salary.

Hungary’s MPs are paid a gross monthly salary of Ft 1.7 million, three times the previous year’s average salary, while Orban’s total salary, including his prime ministerial pay, amounts to Ft 6.3 million, relatively high on an international scale.

While there are countries where the head of government receives more than Orban “for example, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is paid twice as much“ the average Hungarian salary is only a third of the German average, said Bucsky.

However, despite these high salaries, Orban and most Hungarian politicians do not accumulate significant wealth.

Bucsky observed that there are poor countries with wealthy politicians, but it is preferable for politicians to have a decent income, as a guard against unfair enrichment.
