Merger of Hungarian Railways & State Bus Operator Volánbusz Announced
Minister of Construction and Transport, János Lázár, has officially ordered the merger of two state-owned passenger transport companies, MÁV-START Plc. and Volánbusz Plc., into a single entity named MÁV Személyszállítási Plc.

According to magyarbusz.hu this merger, part of the MÁVAUT concept, is set to be completed by the end of the year. As a result, Volánbusz will lose its independence and be fully integrated into MÁV’s passenger transport operations.

The merger is expected to mainly affect company law and management structures, with minimal impact on employees’ daily work.

Since December 2023, both companies have been managed under a unified CEO and board of directors, and from February 1, 2024, they will operate under a single organizational structure.

The idea of merging MÁV and the state bus operator has been discussed since 2010 but never materialized until now.

Previous proposals included forming a joint holding company in January 2012, which was delayed due to MÁV’s debt, and coordinating operations with seven regional transport centers in 2015, which did not happen.

In 2019, the government again proposed a joint holding company, but this was rejected, leading to the integration of the seven transport centers instead.
