Will Downtown Budapest District Ban Airbnb-Type Rentals?
Residents of Budapest’s 6th district, in the city centre, will vote on a ban on Airbnb in a referendum in September, the local council said.

The district council noted that lawmakers earlier gave municipal governments a mandate to limit homestays to a certain number of days per year.

As a limit of 60, 75 or 130 days cannot be legally enforced, residents of the district will be asked whether or not “Airbnb-type rentals” should be banned, it added.

The referendum will be held over two weeks from September 2. All people over the age of 16 with a permanent residency card or a local address are eligible to participate.

There are 2,226 private and other type of tourism accommodations operating in the district at present, close to 8% of all homes in the area, the local council said.
