Szentendre Band’s Newest Album Tops World Music Charts
Söndörgő band’s Gyezz, a new album recorded with jazz saxophonist Chris Potter, has reached number one in the latest edition of the prestigious World Music Charts Europe, in September. The album will be presented to the public on November 15 in Budapest, writes Magyar Nemzet.

Söndörgő grew out of the counterculture environment of the 1970s, when the members were still unborn, but their parents and close relatives were laying the foundations for world fame. Back then, the burgeoning dance-hall movement revived interest in Hungarian tradition.

The members of Söndörgő (Áron Eredics, Dávid Eredics, Salamon Eredics, Benjámin Eredics, Ábel Dénes) carry on the legacy of their ancestors, but their unique style sets them apart, and on the latest album Chris Potter’s playing adds a new dimension to the band’s dynamic music.

“We met Chris for the first time at a party at our house and that’s how our friendship began. A few months later he came to one of our concerts, and after his show in Hungary we got talking and I suggested we could play together. He was surprised at first, because we have different styles, but when we sent him some songs, he really liked them. We ended up recording together in less than 24 hours,” Áron Eredics, the band’s leader noted.

Söndörgő was founded in 1995 in Szentendre (near Budapest) and has become one of the most popular Hungarian bands in Europe. One of the secrets of their success is that they can appeal to young people in the city with their rural traditions, so that the younger generation can see that tradition can simply provide the vocabulary for today’s contemporary music.

The ensemble’s instrumentation, based on the tamburica but including wind and percussion instruments as well as the accordion, is able to authentically sound the densest musical layers of the Balkans.

With their second album (Oj javore, 2006) and two more (In Concert, 2008, Tamburising, 2011) they made the Songlines’ Top of The World list, while Tamburocket, released in summer 2014, has already reached number one on the World Music Charts Europe.

Now the band is doubling up after ten years with another number one. In August, Gyezz was still at number ten on the World Music Charts Europe, but in less than a month it has jumped to the top.

At the time, both Jazzwise and Songlines Magazine gave the latest album a four-star rating, with the latter putting Gyezz at number one on the aforementioned Top of The World list.

Launched online long after XpatLoop.com, this 'government-related' source states its aim is "to provide a complete, unbiased picture of Hungary”. However the site also says that this “does not necessarily mean that our writers do not have their own opinions,” which is useful for our readers to keep in mind. Another stated aim expressed is to become “the leading English-language news portal of Hungary”, which is a role that XpatLoop has successfully fulfilled independently for well over two decades. That noted, our team is open to occasionally sharing a useful Hungary Today article - with their permission of course - for the benefit of our readers.
