EC May Withhold a Further 10.4 Billion Euros from Hungary if Gov't Fails to Act

The European Commission has already taken Hungary to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) over its sovereignty protection law, but further consequences over the legislation may follow, Népszava reports.
Piotr Serafin, the EC’s budget commissioner, has stated that if the ECJ finds that the law violates the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, additional measures could be taken.
While he did not specify what form any penalty might take, Brussels sources suggest that the EU might freeze more funds, according to Népszava.
Hungary has already lost €1 billion due to rule-of-law concerns, with another €1 billion at risk by December this year.
In addition to Erasmus and cohesion funds, a further €10.4 billion in recovery funds could be forfeited by 2026 if the government fails to act.
