Lifetime Achievement Tribute: Hungarian Director Wins at Cannes Film Festival
The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) granted its FIPRESCI 100 Lifetime Achievement Tribute to Hungarian director Istvan Szabo at the 78th Cannes Film Festival and he collected the award late on Friday before the screening of his film Sunshine, which had undergone a full 4K digital restoration.

The 4K digital restoration was made by National Film Institute Hungary, and the film made 25 years ago was screened as part of the Cannes Classics official programme.

The 87-year-old director received a standing ovation.

Festival director Thierry Fremaux said that despite being a real film classic, Sunshine was still very timely.

In his acceptance speech, Szabo said his thesis film Koncert had been invited to Cannes in 1962 where it fetched the best short film award. Over the years, his films have been invited to the competition in Cannes five times, with Colonel Redl fetching the jury award in 1985, and Szabo was member of the jury in 1986.
