The takeover will not require any action from passengers: the same trains will run as earlier and fares, relative to distance, will be no higher than on services operated by MAV.

Before the contract was signed, GYSEV operated 443km of rail lines in the west of the country.

Meanwhile, MAV upgrades fleet

State-owned MAV is upgrading its fleet with 100 locomotives by end-2026, MAV group CEO Zsolt Hegyi said in a video message on social media.

Hegyi said 30 of the locomotives had been delivered, and 24 were already in service.

The hundred-unit order includes 60 Siemens Vectron locomotives that are 2-4 years old, he added.
