The winning entry in the open competition staged by the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) was created by Gergo Galambos and Dome Vereczkei.
Of the 16 entries submitted, the six considered by the jury to be the best can be viewed until the end of the year at an exhibition in one of the Grand Boulevard's characteristic buildings, the Market Hall on Rakoczi ter.
The designers emphasised neon not just as lighting but as a symbol of Budapest's identity and atmosphere, recalling the city's great neon eras of the 1920s-30s and the 1960s-70s.
Most historic neon disappeared after the regime change, and the new design aims to revive that iconic feel.
The Grand Boulevard will now be branded as the Capital Boulevard, with a new logo shaped like the letter K, evoking neon tubes with a clean, timeless design.
The design is also inspired by the BKK logo, reminiscent of old bus stop signs.
The concept extends to public amenities such as chairs, trash bins, and bicycle racks, as well as merchandise such as canvas bags and sweatshirts.
According to the designers, the rebranding will enhance tourism, nightlife, and local economic activity while creating a distinct urban identity.
The project, supported by the EU and the Hungarian government with a Ft 4.5 billion grant, follows public consultations and planning presentations held earlier this year.
