Renewal of Budapest's 'Grand Boulevard': to Restore Historic Grandeur & Solve New Needs
- 20 Feb 2026 6:42 AM
Key elements of the development funded by 10 billion forints (EUR 26m) in EU money include the revitalisation of public spaces with a focus on preserving and extending the historic tree-lined avenue, improving safety, and making the boulevard fit for pedestrians and cyclists, alongside road surface upgrades for drivers.
Also, small businesses will be encouraged to enhance services and reduce vacant retail spaces.
A new "Grand Boulevard Authority" will aim to ensure high-quality maintenance, while setting up partnerships with property owners to create a more unified and high-standard visual identity, including incentives for facade renovations and a support programme for residential properties.
Cultural reinvigoration plans include making the boulevard a vibrant meeting place with events and activities, the mayor said.
Samu Balogh of BKK Public Space Development noted that the action plan (available at https://budapest.hu/korut) includes tailored recommendations for each building's shopfronts. No trees will be felled during construction. Instead, at least two new trees will be planted for every one replaced.
The project also aims to expand root zones for existing trees, as successfully tested at Blaha Lujza Square, with a pilot for 78 trees, he said.
Zoltan Ero, Budapest's chief architect, highlighted the boulevard's role as a classic model of urban development, balancing diversity with unity through ground-floor commercial spaces.
Adam Bodor of BKK Mobility confirmed the boulevard would remain Budapest's main traffic artery but with a shift towards sustainable transport, including a 4.5 billion forint EU-funded cycle superhighway and dedicated parking bays for residents and businesses.
Public forums in affected districts held from March 3 to 11 will present final plans rather than gather input.
The Neonfényes korut concept has won the design competition for the boulevard.
