Watch: Biodome Urban Oasis in Budapest to Open This Summer
- 4 May 2026 5:50 PM
The central hall of the Biodome – covering nearly one hectare of the 1.7-hectare complex – will be unveiled as a permanent, year-round “urban oasis”, independent of external weather conditions.
A Tropical World in the City
The new space will feature around 13,000 tropical and subtropical plants, creating a lush, immersive environment. Alongside the rich plant life, visitors can also discover a range of rare and remarkable animal species, including Hanuman langur, the critically endangered Bali myna, and African spurred tortoises – the third largest land tortoise species in the world.
Beyond flora and fauna, the Biodome will offer interactive, educational experiences designed to bring natural science to life in an engaging way. A dramatic 14.5-metre-high indoor waterfall will further enhance the exotic atmosphere of this unique community space.
A Major Development Project
The urban oasis is being created within the Biodome structure – originally built between 2017 and 2020 to around 80% completion – through a new development project worth HUF 350 million. The majority of funding comes from the Zoo’s own revenues, with additional support provided by the Budapest Municipality.
Work has been underway for months, including the installation of nearly 3,000 square metres of planted surfaces, green walls, artificial rock features and decorative elements to create a fully immersive environment.
Building on Growing Popularity
In recent years, the Biodome has already hosted a variety of successful temporary exhibitions and events, including light shows, photo exhibitions, Chinese lantern festivals and even a life-size dinosaur display. Since December 2023, these attractions have drawn more than 311,000 visitors.
With the opening of this new permanent attraction, the Biodome is set to become an even more significant destination within Budapest’s cultural and leisure scene.
