Tighter Rules on Fireworks in Budapest for New Year’s Eve Celebrations
Budapest is introducing stricter fireworks rules for New Year's Eve this year, affecting most of the city, according to an announcement from the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK).

The Budapest City Council has expanded restrictions on category 2 and 3 pyrotechnics in public areas.

These fireworks are banned citywide before 8 p.m. on December 31 and after 2 a.m. on January 1, all day in protected zones on December 31 and January 1, and year-round in highly protected areas.

Breaking the rules carries fines from 200,000 to 1.2 million forints (about €515–3,000).

Firecrackers remain illegal nationwide at all times, with fines up to 200,000 forints.

District 12's local government shared a map on social media showing the zones.

White areas (unprotected) allow category 2 and 3 fireworks only from 8 p.m. on December 31 to 2 a.m. on January 1.

Peach areas face a full ban on those dates, covering residential buildings and their 50-meter surroundings.

Blue highly protected zones—such as nature reserves, Natura 2000 sites like Normafa Park, forests, parks, cemeteries, zoos, care homes, and hospitals, plus some 100-meter buffers—prohibit them entirely year-round.

Pyrotechnic categories are marked on packaging: class 2 includes lower-noise items like rockets and small Roman candles; class 3 covers louder displays like cluster bombs and large Roman candles.
