Mohacs 500: Anniversary of Historic Battle in Hungary Sees New Investments & Cultural Programmes
Large-scale investments and development projects, significant cultural programmes and artworks are under preparation in connection with the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohacs in 1526, the ministerial commissioner responsible for the tasks said.

Janos Hargitai, a co-ruling Christian Democrats lawmaker for the region, told a press conference that the government made a number of decisions on investments related to the commemorative year, and last year parliament also passed a law on commemorating the heroes of the Battle of Mohacs.

The legislation commemorates the Hungarian, Czech, Croatian, German, and Serbian heroes of Mohacs who defended Hungary and central Europe, he added.

In terms of regional development, the section of the M6 motorway running alongside the city to the Croatian border has been completed, and work is under way on nearly 30km of new roads, including the four-lane section between the motorway and Mohacs, as well as the country's largest bridge development, and preparations are under way to connect Villany to the motorway, he said.

The 500th anniversary celebrations will be organised in such a way as to also provide an overview of the 1687 battle of Nagyharsany, which resulted in the expulsion of the Turks, ie, the second battle of Mohacs, he added. The Mohacs region is not only a symbol of national tragedy, but also of victory over an empire that ruled the Balkans and Hungarian lands for half a millennium, he said.

Gabor Moczar, director general of the National Heritage Institute, said that on the most important day, the 500th anniversary of the battle, on August 29, the Hungarian Catholic Bishops' Conference is expected to hold a high mass in the votive church.

The remains from the mass graves will be laid to rest, a large-scale commemoration will be held at the memorial site with the participation of the leaders of the countries that took part in the battle, and in the evening, the Mohacs 500 rock musical will be performed in the city centre, he added.
