Organ Weekend, Palace of Arts Budapest, 25 - 26 April
This year, Müpa’s much-loved Organ Weekend once again opens the door to the remarkable world of this extraordinary instrument. The programme invites audiences to explore the organ’s vast expressive range – from family-friendly discovery concerts and timeless classics to a silent film screening with live accompaniment, and even a world premiere.

More about Buster Keaton: Sherlock Jr. (1924) – silent film with improvised organ accompaniment here

Curated by László Fassang, the weekend brings together a vibrant mix of styles and experiences.

One highlight is an innovative, improvisation-driven trio featuring György Kurtág Jr. and Vincent Lê Quang, combining organ, saxophone and live electronics in a bold and contemporary soundscape.

For those new to the instrument, a matinée concert offers a welcoming introduction through popular opera favourites, making it easy to fall in love with the so-called “queen of instruments”.

Cinema fans are also in for a treat, as Sherlock Jr. – the classic by Buster Keaton – will be screened with live organ accompaniment by Monika Melcová.

The weekend culminates in the Budapest debut of outstanding young virtuoso Alexis Grizard, performing with the Danubia Orchestra.

The closing concert features a major work by Franz Liszt, followed by the world premiere of Judit Varga’s newly commissioned organ concerto Endless Fall Through the Crimson Sky – The Horizon Swallows Time – a powerful and evocative addition to the contemporary repertoire.
