Hospital Infections Data to be Made Public in Hungary
The government has decided to make data on nosocomial infections public, Government Spokeswoman Anita Kobol said in Budapest on Wednesday.

Kobol told a press conference on the decisions made at the cabinet meeting on Tuesday that Minister of Health Zsolt Hegedus had been tasked with developing a monitoring system by June 30 that would ensure that data can be compiled and released by Sept 1.

"It is obvious, and official data and international studies have shown, that this has been a severe problem in Hungary for years. We can perceive the gaping discrepancy between domestic and international data, which makes it likely that real case numbers are well above the ones the government has so far known about," she said.

The health-care minister will prepare measures necessary for the public disclosure of hospital infection data and to strengthen the patient rights system by June 30, according to government decisions published late on Tuesday.

The deadline for publishing the first set of validated and professionally interpreted data on hospital infections is Sept 30.

According to another resolution published late on Tuesday, the minister must prepare a proposal by June 30 on the operating principles, safeguards and development priorities for the institutional framework designed to protect patients' rights.
