Catering Crisis: Why So Many Cafés & Restaurants in Hungary are Closing
- 28 May 2026 5:16 AM
The sharpest decline has been seen in bars and pubs, where the number of venues has more than halved, dropping from over 20,000 to 9,865.
Restaurants and buffets have been more resilient, with 21,190 still operating compared with 24,709 in 2010, although the pandemic clearly accelerated the downward trend.
Confectioneries and nightclubs have also struggled: pastry shops have slipped to 3,692 from a 2020 peak, while music and dance venues have shrunk from 680 to just 362.
But the story is about more than rising costs. Businesses have been under pressure from higher wages, the 2022 energy crisis, and food inflation, yet experts say deeper structural changes are also reshaping the sector.
In rural areas, falling populations and ageing communities have weakened demand, while consumers across the country have increasingly turned to home delivery, ready-to-eat bakery chains, and large-scale festivals instead of traditional venues.
A decade of mandatory online cash registers has also helped make the market more transparent, reducing the space for smaller businesses that once relied on informal financial buffers to survive.
And although rising real incomes would normally support more spending on services, Hungary’s changing social habits and digital lifestyle mean fewer traditional hospitality venues can stay afloat unless they adapt quickly.
