The honour is given to cities with outstanding achievements in supporting Ukraine since the war started, Karacsony said on Facebook. "Budapest has indeed provided much tangible aid," he said, citing the donation of aggregators and other equipment to sister cities Berehove (Beregszasz) and Kyiv, among other things, as examples. Budapest also played its part in providing for refugees, he added.

"We will continue to do everything we can to make sure that our friends taking refuge in the city feel at home there. We will continue to provide summer camps for Ukrainian children..." he said.

"Moreover, we ... preserved our moral compass in an era of madness and depravity." The honour belongs to Budapest citizens who "continued to signal their solidarity in many ways amid the hate campaigns forced on them."

Karacsony noted that Zelensky highlighted in his speech that Budapest had opposed the previous government's foreign policy, and said that he hoped to work in partnership with the incumbent one.
