Police Chief in Budapest Fired by New Interior Minister
- 8 Jun 2026 12:56 PM
Terdik had led the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) since 2019 and recently presented a report showing a significant decline in crime across the Hungarian capital.
According to figures released last week, the number of crimes requiring police action in Budapest fell by almost 23% in 2025 compared to the previous year. Public-space offences also declined, although the number of homicide cases rose.
No detailed explanation for the dismissal was immediately provided.
The move comes amid a period of broader personnel changes within Hungary's public institutions following the formation of the country's new government under Prime Minister Péter Magyar.
Recent weeks have seen several senior officials replaced as the administration begins implementing its reform agenda.
Terdik's departure is likely to attract attention given the recent positive crime statistics reported by Budapest police.
Presenting the force's annual report to the Budapest
Assembly, he noted that several categories of crime had fallen to historically low levels in 2025.
For Budapest residents and expatriates, no immediate changes to policing, public safety measures or police services have been announced.
The Interior Ministry is expected to name a successor in the coming days.
