The Planetarium opened in 1977; by the time it was closed due to water damage, it received 100,000-150,000 visitors a year, Tanacs said in the video.

Experts of the science and technology and the transport and investment ministries will work to outline a plan to reopening the Planetarium, he said.

Mayor outlines development plans for capital's largest public park

Budapest mayor Gergely Karacsony welcomed a proposal to renovate the Planetarium and outlined development plans for Nepliget, the capital's largest public park, in a Facebook post on Sunday.

Karacsony said he had raised the situation of the Planetarium with Zoltan Tanacs, the miniser of science and technology, a few weeks ago, and the minister said he would propose the renovation of the building to the government.

He said "the renewal of the Planetarium and Nepliget are unthinkable without each other".

The mayor said the City Council has drafted detailed plans for the renewal of the park in recent years, and he sent these to the minister on Friday.

A decision that will determine the development of the park in the long term is that the Transport Museum will remain nearby and the park will get new transport connections with the development of the Southern Ring Railway, he said.

The first phase of the project could be financed from European Union funds, but "the previous government prevented this for political reasons," Karacsony added.

Hopefully "the new government will be a partner in this and in the further steps of the renovation of the park," he added.

According to the plans, green spaces will be renewed, the park's accessibility improved, recreational functions expanded and traffic on the roads that cut through the park will be reduced.
