Permit Granted for Budapest's City Hall Park in Centre of City

The capital has received the final heritage protection permit for the construction of City Hall Park, Mayor Gergely Karacsony said on Facebook on Tuesday.

Karacsony said the last permit had arrived, and instead of a car park, there would now finally be a park in the centre of the city. 

"Every green space in the city centre is priceless, or rather, it is life itself. This is why it is a big deal that the capital's government office has finally issued the heritage protection permit for the construction of City Hall Park. It seems a change of government was needed for this," he wrote.

The lengthy permitting process is now over, and work can begin on the implementation plans, he added.

The mayor said the park's creation would not happen overnight, as a series of modern and innovative solutions would be applied.

The "sponge city" concept will create 7,730 square metres of green space, along with 6,966 square metres of rainwater collection surfaces and 850 square metres of water-permeable surfaces to ensure the park remains sustainable and pleasant in the long term despite the challenges of climate change.

He added that 80 trees will be planted using the Stockholm method.

The City Hall Park project also includes the Open City Hall concept, which involves transforming the ground-floor rooms of City Hall, making them open and accessible.

This includes renovating the Ratskeller, the large space beneath the ceremonial hall, to create outdoor cafes, terraces, and catering units.

"City Hall Park will be more than a public park: a new main square for the city will be created," Karacsony said, noting that seven years ago, as a mayoral candidate, one of his first promises was to create the park.
