Hungary’s new government has formally stated that Russia’s behaviour poses a “threat to Hungary, Europe and the global order”, signalling a significant shift in Budapest’s foreign policy under Prime Minister Péter Magyar.

The government has condemned Russia’s military aggression, reaffirmed its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and backed negotiations aimed at securing a lasting peace and security guarantees.

The position represents a clear departure from the more Russia-friendly approach of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and points towards closer alignment with European partners.

However, Hungary continues to maintain substantial energy ties with Russia, meaning the policy shift is likely to have important implications for Budapest’s future relations with both Brussels and Moscow.
