B+N Hungary Insight: Where Cleanliness Saves Lives

For more than fifteen years, B+N Referencia Zrt. has been providing facility management services within the healthcare sector. Today, it operates at nearly 700 sites across seven countries, including hospitals, private clinics, pharmaceutical manufacturing plants and pharmacy networks.
In Hungary alone, more than 5,000 employees at its subsidiary, B+N Magyarország Kft., are engaged in hospital cleaning, while nearly 1,500 staff operate healthcare institutions.
Stopping the Spread of Infection
To the uninitiated — especially older generations accustomed to traditional household methods — it may seem unusual to see impregnated mop systems in healthcare facilities instead of the familiar “bucket of bleach solution”.
This technology, also used by B+N Magyarország Kft., significantly reduces the risk of pathogen transfer from one surface to another, enables far more effective disinfection, and dries much faster than conventional mopping, thereby substantially reducing the risk of accidents, Portfolio points out.
In high-risk areas, a single impregnated mop is sufficient to clean an area roughly the size of a small room, and it must not be used in another space, further limiting the chance of cross-contamination. Used mops are collected and transported through a closed system to a medical laundry facility, from which they are returned ready for reuse.
Each mop is tagged with an RFID system, allowing it to be tracked throughout its entire lifecycle.
Infection Can Originate Anywhere
Hospital-acquired infections generally stem from three main sources: inadequate cleaning, the behaviour of patients and visitors, and failure to adhere to hospital protocols. By regulating cleaning practices and eliminating errors arising from previous operational processes, B+N Magyarország Kft. works tirelessly to minimise these risks.
In the hospitals operated and cleaned by B+N, the most advanced procedures are employed, alongside strict standards and unified inspection methods. The company also employs hygienists and healthcare experts who continuously monitor workflows and the areas under management.
Cleanliness is verified through several documented methods. Beyond visual inspection, a range of tools can confirm the quality of cleaning work. One such method is UV marking, whereby an invisible substance that fluoresces under ultraviolet light is applied to surfaces before cleaning.
After the task is completed, an ultraviolet lamp is used to check whether the marking has been removed; if it remains visible, the surface has not been cleaned properly.
The work of B+N Group’s cleaning staff is also assessed using ATP testing, one of the most advanced methods for measuring hygiene levels. As part of the cleaning protocol, periodic microbiological sampling is also carried out.
Operations Also Play a Role in Success
B+N also has significant experience in healthcare operations management. In Hungarian hospitals, for example, the introduction of its incident reporting centre — developed jointly with IBM — has created a far faster and more efficient process.
Over the past two and a half years, nearly 600,000 fault reports have been logged, with an average of 20,000 tickets received each month.
Work to resolve these issues often has to begin within minutes to ensure that healthcare institutions can continue operating without disruption.
