Cake of the Year in Hungary: A Berry, Nutty, Sour Cream Winner
- 17 Aug 2026 9:11 AM
The winning Bíborfehér (“Purple-White”) was created by master pastry chefs László Balogh, Roland Kis and Zoltán Balogh of Kézműves Confectionery in Gyula. The team has now won the competition two years in a row, having also taken the title in 2025.

This year’s competition attracted a record 60 entries. Cakes were required to contain two Hungarian ingredients - rögös túró, a traditional type of curd cheese, and sour cream - while the unusually high number of entries required a four-round judging process.
Bíborfehér combines forest berries and toasted almonds with sour-cream mousse and Hungarian curd cheese, bringing together fruity, creamy and nutty flavours.
Sugar-Free Cake of the Year

The Sugar-Free Cake of the Year title was awarded for the 15th time this year in cooperation between the Egy Csepp Figyelem Foundation and the Hungarian Confectioners’ Guild.
The 2026 winner is Szilvafácska (“Little Plum Tree”) from Promenád Café in Balatongyörök, created by Alena Puchovszki, Jenő Vadócz and Gábor Pethő.
The cake combines layers of plum, walnut and milk chocolate with cinnamon mousse, complemented by the freshness of green tea.
Hungary’s St. Stephen’s Day Bread Also Awarded

The winning St. Stephen’s Day Bread of 2026 is Pilisi Pityókás (“Potato Bread from Pilis”), made by HEL Pékség Kft.
The bread is prepared with potatoes and traditional sourdough, with its name referring both to the traditional Hungarian word for potato and to the Pilis region.
A total of 26 bakeries submitted 80 breads to this year’s competition.
In the innovative bread category, first place went to Magvető (“Sower”), a long-fermented sourdough bread made by Sütőmix Kft. – Kossuth 1 Bakery.

The 'On-the-Go' Pastry of the Year is Citrom virág (“Lemon Flower”) from Pedró Bakery. It is made with laminated pastry fermented for 16 hours and filled with homemade lemon cream.
Where to Try the Winners
The winning cakes and breads will be widely available at pastry shops and bakeries across Hungary from August 20.
The cakes will also be available to taste at Budapest’s Street of Hungarian Flavors during the St. Stephen’s Day celebrations.
