1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I arrived to Hungary in Jan 1997 for a job. I thought I would be here for about a year. I came with 3 suitcases and my snowboard.
2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
I've moved around the US but never anywhere else abroad.
3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
Things are much, much different now then when I arrived. A lot surprised me when I came in '97 but today different things surprise me like how easy it is to live here and find everything you need or want to do, however, the price of things and taxes are getting very expensive.
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend- what must they absolutely see and do?
I love when friends come to visit. The countryside is great. I love going down to Villany and wine tasting with friends then visiting Pecs. However, when we only have time to stay in Budapest then it's fun to walk up Andrassy and around Hero's Square. Walking around the castle and having a cake at Ruszwurm is also a must. These days i also make the Four Seasons a must-see as it is a beautiful building with such history. And, the service in there is the best you will get in Budapest.
5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
I love a lot of the soups in the winter time like bableves. Everyone in my family loves palacsinta. I can easily eat it plain or with a little lemon and sugar. And, who can resist freshly baked pogácsa?
6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Our fridge is always full as we love to entertain. We always have friends over for dinner parties and barbecues. We also love impromptu gatherings and that's why we always have cold white wine, chilled champagne, beer, lots of cheeses, sweet chili sauce and lots of veggies. We also always have tons of milk. I have a serious milk (never the long life stuff) addiction and all 3 of our kids drink it too.
7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Pattogatott kukorica
8. What do you miss the most from home?
Friends, family, baseball games, soft sandy beaches, bagels, magazines, Target, good burgers & steaks, going into a DIY store and being able to figure out what I need, online shopping
9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
I used to always dream of being a pro-beach volleyball player. I've definitely passed my prime and I'm now too old.
10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Funeral home director
11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Wrote half of these answers while in Disneyland Paris with my husband and our 3 children
12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
We travel a lot. I have a business trip to Rome next month but then a fun trip with my son and some friends to Paris at the end of May. I'm hoping to get to Vietnam in 2008 and South Africa within the next 2 years.
13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Bands include everything from The Who, Rolling Stones, Kinks to the Violent Femmes, Steve Miller Band and I loved the Go-Gos and Pat Benatar in my early teens! The Lost Boys was a favorite film in high school as I've always liked Kiefer Sutherland. My friends and I had a lot of the funny lines memorized... We were pretty enjoying about reciting them. Hobby was anything sports related.
14. What can't you resist?
A great barbecue with good friends, our kids, nice wine and delicious foods.
15. Red wine or white?
Champagne! Followed by white in the summer and red in the winter.
16. Book or movie?
Love both. There's nothing better than a really great book! It seems like great movies are much harder to come by...
17. Morning person or night person?
I'd have to say I'm a night person more than a morning person. However, there are many nights I'm in bed by 10pm!
18. Dog person or cat person?
I prefer dogs. We have 3 (2 Bernese Mountain dogs and 1 Border Collie), however, we also have a cat. And, 2 fish.
19. Buda side or Pest side?
If we didn't have small kids (and dogs) I'd say Pest. However, other than work, our lives are in Buda right now.
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Carpe Diem. You never know when someone's time is up. I've lost too many dear friends and family members and you don't get a second chance.
